Caption

The magnetic field around a bar magnet is revealed using iron filings. The flux lines which make up the magnetic field form close loops flowing from the magnet's north (N) to south (S) poles. Each filing becomes magnetized by induction (due to the close proximity of the permanent magnet) and aligns itself accordingly along the nearest line of flux.
