Light micrograph of a section through the human cerebellum, or hindbrain, which coordinates fine movement, posture, & balance. It is a large convoluted structure at the base & back of the brain. In this micrograph, each fold of brain tissue is seen to consist of layers. Cells in the outer portion have stained more darkly. Unusually shaped neurones called Purkinje cells inhabit the whiter band between the inner & outer layers. Densely packed nerve fibres form the central core of each fold. Marsland silver stain). Magnification: x14 at 35mm size, x30 at 6x7cm size. Ref: MICROCOSMOS, fig.
