Colour-digitised magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a normal brain showing the cerebral hemis- pheres and pituitary gland. At upper centre, the dark area within the skull is the nasal cavity with internal nasal bones (pink). Beneath this, the pituitary gland (hypophysis) appears as small patches of brown/yellow tissue above a heart- shaped structure (at centre). The pituitary is the master endocrine gland that controls secretion of hormones around the body. The heart-shaped structure is the pons that links the brainstem with the brain. On either side of the pons are the oval cerebral hemispheres of the brain.
