Brain anatomy. Coloured three-dimensional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the brain seen from the front. The hemispherical symmetry of the brain is clearly seen. The cerebrum (responsible for conscious thought and movement) consists of a right and left hemisphere (upper right and upper left). Below this, at the base of the brain, the cerebellum (which controls subconscious functions) also has two hemispheres (lower right and lower left) either side of the brainstem (lower centre) that connects to the spinal cord (not seen). Deep inside the head, under the brain, is the pituitary gland (brown), the master gland that the brain uses to secrete hormones to control other glands.
