Healthy brain, coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan. The brain is seen in profile. The nose is at far right, and behind it are the sinuses (dark), air spaces in the skull. These meet the air spaces at the back of the mouth at lower centre, and continue down to the lungs (not seen). The blocks of the vertebrae in the neck are seen down centre. The white semicircle in the centre of the brain is the corpus callosum, a structure made up of nerve fibres that links the two cerebral hemispheres.
