View of small permanent magnet coated in iron filings, which trace out the shape of its magnetic field. The magnetic field induces magnetism in each of the filings, which then line up in the field like tiny compasses. Although the field is actually continous, interactions between the filings cause them to accumulate in thin arcing lines.
