Caption

Brain activity during thinking about words. This is a composite of a 3-D magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan (blue) of the brain, overlaid with positron emission tomography (PET) scan data (red/green) showing brain activity. The brain is seen from the side, with the front of the brain at left. The active region is in the left cerebral hemisphere, which is associated with language skills. In this test, words are being thought about before being spoken, and the frontal cortex region is most active. For similar scans showing the speaking, reading and hearing of words, see images P335/077, 078 and 079 respectively.
