Light micrograph of a Purkinje cell from the cerebellum of a new-born infant, ie a developing nerve cell from the section of the hindbrain which is responsible for maintenance of muscle tone, balance & synchronization of activity in voluntary muscles. The Purkinje cell is part of the multipolar neurone group of nerve cells, ie where numerous dendrites (highly branched, tapering processes) extend from the cell body (the black mass at bottom) & which connect with neighbouring neurones from which they receive stimuli.
