Caption

Light micrograph of nerve tissue from the cerebrum, the largest part of the vertebrate brain. The function of the cerebrum is to integrate complex sensory and neural functions. It is thought to play a critical role in the process of learning. The heavily stained spots are neurones, basic functional units of the nervous system. Each one is a cell specialised to transmit electrical nerve impulses. Magnification: x60 at 35mm size.
