Synapse. Coloured Transmission Electron Micrograph (TEM) of a synapse, the junction between two nerve cells. Synapses transmit an electrical signal from one nerve cell to the next in only one direction. In this case, the pre-synaptic cell is blue, the post-synaptic cell is pink. When an electrical signal reaches a synapse it stimulates the release of chemicals called neurotransmitters from tiny vesicles (pink circles) at the end of the cell. The neurotransmitters then cross a microscopic gap and bind to the receptor nerve cell, passing on the signal. Synapses are found at the junctions of all nerve cells and at the junctions between nerve cells and muscles. Magnification unknown.
