Sensory nerve cell. Computer artwork of a sensory nerve cell (neurone). This sensory neurone has sense receptors (at upper right), a single axon covered in protective myelin sheath (at centre) and branching axon terminals (at lower left). Sensory neurones carry nerve impulses from sense receptors, along their axons, into the central nervous system. Different sense receptors react to different physical stimuli such as cold, pressure, or light of a certain wavelength. The myelin sheaths insulating the axons are made by specialised Schwann's cells and help to speed the transmission of electrical signals along the axon.
