Nerve cell. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a neurone embedded in grey matter in the central nervous system. The neurone consists of a cell body (red) and a single nerve fibre (axon, orange). The cell body, also known as the perikaryon, contains the neurone's nucleus (yellow). The axon transmits nerve impulses away from the cell body. The grey matter consists of other nerve cells, myelinated nerve fibres, support cells and capillaries.
