Motor neurone. Light micrograph of a section through a motor neurone (nerve cell) from the anterior horn of the spinal cord. The cell's nucleus, which contains its genetic information, is at centre. The cell has been stained to show Nissl substance (dark purple), a granular endoplasmic reticulum (ER), the site of protein synthesis within a cell. The ER produces the neurotransmitters needed to relay impulses from the central nervous system to muscle fibres. Magnification: x1150 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
