Brain cortex tissue. Light micrograph of a section through tissue from the cortex of the brain. The cortex, or grey matter, is the outer layer of the brain, and is composed mainly of nerve cell nuclei (round, grey/blue). Glial cells (neuroglia) are red. Glial cells are non-neuronal cells that provide structural support and nutrients to the nerve cells (neurons). The cortex is involved in conscious thought, language and awareness. Magnification: x160 when printed 10cm wide.
