Human eye. Macrophotograph of the human eye. At centre is the pupil (black) surrounded by the brown iris. At far left and far right the white of the eye is visible. The white is known as the sclera, a tough outer coating of the eyeball. The eyelashes (black, at top) protect the eye from dust. The pupil and iris are covered by the cornea, a protective lens which also performs most of the focusing of light as it enters the eye. The eye is the organ of sight and consists of structures that focus an image on the retina, an area of light sensitive cells at the back of the eye. Magnification: x2 at 6x4.5cm size.
