Color enhanced dental x-ray of molars and premolars. The root of each tooth (purple) is surrounded by the gums and embedded in the jawbone (green). The dark blue area in the center of the dentin or hard, porous tissue that makes up the bulk of the tooth is the pulp. The pulp contains veins and blood vessels that provide the teeth with nutrients. The light blue areas in the crowns of the teeth are fillings. Teeth are filled after a cavity has been removed, preventing further decay, to strenghten the tooth.
