Digestive system. Artwork of organs forming the human digestive system. At top, food in the mouth is mixed with saliva secreted by salivary glands, enters the tube-like oesophagus and passes to the stomach. In the stomach (partly dissected) food is stored and digested by gastric juices. The gall bladder (green) and pancreas (glandular) secrete their enzymes into the C-shaped duodenum of the small intestine. The coiled small intestine (lower centre) carries out food absorption. Food residue then passes into the large intestine where water is absorbed, and faeces are stored in the rectum (bottom centre). The liver is coloured brown.
