Caption

Digestive system. Computer artwork showing a human digestive system. At top centre, the lower oesophagus, a tube which transports food from mouth to stomach is seen. The stomach (at upper centre) stores and digests food. The food then enters the small intestine, a coiled tube (at centre) which is the longest region of the digestive system. In the small intestine, food is further digested and absorbed into the blood. Food residue then passes into the large intestine or colon (around small intestine), were excess water is absorbed. The finger like appendix is seen at lower left. Waste faeces is then stored in the rectum (at lower centre) prior to defecation.
