Small intestine surface, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Several cells are seen as hexagonal shapes. The surfaces are covered in numerous microvilli, causing the rough and mottled appearance. These microvilli absorb nutrients from the food that is digested in the small intestine by chemicals secreted by the cells. Magnification unknown.
