Intestinal microvilli. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of microvilli (yellow) from the duodenum, the first part of the small intestine. These tiny structures form a dense brush-like covering on the absorptive surfaces of the enterocyte cells. These cells absorb nutrients from digested food through these microvilli. There are billions of microvilli in a small intestine. Magnification: x36,500 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
