Intestinal lining. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of villi from the lining of the small intestine. Villi are finger-like projections that increase the surface area available for absorption of nutrients. Goblet cells (red) on the villi secrete mucus (purple), a slippery substance that protects the lining and eases the passage of food along the intestines.
