Intestinal lining. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of villi (pink) from the lining of the small intestine. Villi are finger- like projections that increase the surface area available for the absorption of nutrients. Cells within the villi produce mucus (orange), a slippery substance that protects the lining and eases the passage of food along the intestines.
