Magnetism. Image 1 of 3. Iron filings being attracted to a bar magnet. The magnetic field of the magnet induces a small magnetic field in the iron filings, and the opposite magnetic poles than attract each other. The iron filings will remain magnetised for a time after the bar magnet has been removed. See images A230/083-085 for a sequence showing the iron being demagnetised by a reaction with sulphur.
