Liver cells. Light micrograph of a section through liver cells (hepatocytes) from the parenchyma of a liver lobule. The parenchyma is the active part of an organ. The cells are arranged so that blood can easily pass between them. The cells help to regul- ate the levels of chemicals in the blood, absorb nutrients and detoxify harmful substances such as alcohol.
