Liver cells. Light micrograph of a section through a healthy liver. Liver cells (hepatocytes) are arranged into lobules, the irregular hexagonal boundary of which are defined by the portal tracts (upper right). Blood from the tracts flows towards the central vein between the lobules. The liver's functions include waste detoxification, blood sugar regulation and the storage and metabolism of fats.
