Foetal abdomen. Macro photograph of a section through the abdomen of a 7 month old foetus. The front of the body is at bottom. The liver (brown) has various functions, including the detoxification of blood and bile production. The gall bladder (white oval overlapping the liver) concentrates and stores bile from the liver, and releases it into the small intestine (purple structures at left) where it aids the digestion of fats. At top centre is the spine. The spinal cord is yellow and the bone of the vertebra is grey. Either side of the spine are the two kidneys (purple), which filter waste products from the blood and excrete it as urine.
