Pancreas in abdomen. Coloured three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) scan through the human abdomen, showing the pancreas. This is an axial (horizontal) section of the abdomen viewed from below. The spinal column and vertebrae are at the top of scan, while sectioned ribs surround the abdomen. The gall bladder (grey) is over the kidney (green) at left. The aorta is the large red blood vessel just in front of the vertebrae. The pancreas (yellow) produces many types of enzymes and is vital for controlling blood sugar levels. With this CT scan "slice" images produced of the body by X-rays are combined to produce a three- dimensional view.
