Caption

Series of illustrations on the structure of the human kidney. The whole organs at left reveal surface anatomy & a section showing blood supply & ureter. At right are the structures of a nephron, the functional unit of excretion in the kidney. Blood circulating in branches of the renal artery (red) is filtered through a knot of capillaries into the surrounding Bowman's capsule (cup-shaped). Water, nitrogenous waste & other substances pass through the renal tubule, where reabsorption into blood may occur. The remaining urine drains into the bladder. ALL MORAL RIGHTS ASSERTED. CROPPING OR ANY DEROGATORY TREATMENT FORBIDDEN. COPYRIGHT PETER CULL 1990.
