Kidneys. Computer digitised illustration of a pair of healthy kidneys, with associated blood vessels and ureters. The kidneys (bean-shaped structures, 10-12.5cm long, about 170g in weight) are situated at the back of the abdominal cavity just above the waist. They filter the blood and excrete waste products and excess water in the form of urine. The kidneys receive blood from two renal arteries which branch off the large abdominal aortic artery (at centre). Renal arteries are at upper centre left and right. Filtered urine leaves the kidneys through two ureters (lower left and right) to pass into the bladder.
