Kidney. Artwork of a section through part of a human kidney. Coloured pink is the medulla. Contained within the medulla are the functional units of the kidney, the nephrons. A close-up of one nephron is at upper right. It consists of a glomerulus of capillaries (red, looped) contained within a Bowman's capsule (rounded) with a tubule below. Filtration by the glomerulus and selective reabsorption and secretion in the tubule forms urine. Urine is received by the renal pelvis (yellow) which will join the ureter (not shown). At bottom left corner are the renal vein (blue) and the renal artery (red).
