Kidney glomerulus. Light micrograph of a section through kidney cortex showing a glomerulus. Glomeruli form part of the kidney's functional units, the nephrons, of which there are about 1 million in a kidney. The glomerulus (centre) is a tightly coiled network of capillaries. As blood passes through the glomerulus, water and metabolic wastes are filtered through the capillary walls. The water and waste (filtrate) then pass into the lumen of the Bowman's capsule (white). From the capsule the filtrate drains into the tubules (rounded, in surrounding tissue). Reabsorption of most of the filtrate occurs in the tubules. Magnification x160 at 5x7cm size.
