Caption

Kidney glomeruli. Light micrograph of a section through the kidney cortex showing two glomeruli. Glomeruli form part of the kidney's functional units, the nephrons, of which there are about 1 million in a kidney. Glomeruli (upper and lower right) are tightly coiled networks of capillaries. As blood passes through a glomerulus, water and metabolic wastes are filtered through the capillary walls. The water and waste (filtrate) pass into the lumen of the Bowman's capsule (white). From the capsule the filtrate drains into the tubules (rounded, in surrounding tissue). Azan stained. Magnification x230 at 5x7cm size.
