Kidney glomeruli. Light micrograph of a section through the kidney cortex showing glomeruli. Glomeruli (dark, rounded) form part of the kidney's functional units, the nephrons, of which there are about 1 million in a kidney. They consist of tightly coiled networks of capillaries. As blood passes through a glomerulus, water and metabolic wastes are filtered through the capillary walls. The water and waste (filtrate) pass into the lumen of the Bowman's capsule (white surround). From the capsule the filtrate drains into the tubules (rounded, in surrounding occurs. Magnification x100 at 35mm size.
