Healthy kidneys. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan of the human abdomen, showing kidneys and other internal organs. In this axial (horizontal) slice the patient is viewed from below. The kidneys (yellow) are supplied with blood through the renal arteries (pink) from the aorta (red/white, at upper centre). The kidneys filter the blood and excrete waste and excess water as urine. Between the kidneys is a spinal vertebra (white) which protects the spinal column. Back muscles (blue/green, at lower centre), the liver (orange) and the intestines (green/blue, at centre right) are also visible. CT scans use X- rays to produce "slices" through body tissue.
