Kidney absorptive cell. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through one of the absorptive cells that lines the kidney tubules. At top is the cell nucleus (blue), with the mitochondria (red), the energy providers of the cell, below. At bottom are several highly folded microvillous processes (yellow). It is through these that the renal tubules reabsorb useful salts and water that would otherwise be lost in the urine. This reabsorbed filtrate is then passed back into the blood. Magnification: x4240 at 6x4.5cm size.
