Kidney cortex. Light micrograph of a section through the kidney cortex showing two glomeruli and several tubules. The glomeruli (red, centre left & centre right) consist of a tightly coiled network of capillaries. As blood passes through each glomerulus, water and metabolic wastes are filtered through the capillary walls. The water and waste (filtrate) pass into the lumen of the Bowman's capsule (white surround). From the capsule the filtrate drains into the tubules (rounded, in surrounding tissue), where much reabsorption of the filtrate occurs. Magnification: x50 at 35mm size.
