Kidneys. Coloured gamma scan (scintigram) of a pair of healthy human kidneys, seen from behind. The body outline (blue) includes the arms on each side. The two kidneys filter waste products from the blood, passing them in the form of urine to the bladder (not seen). The uptake of blood by the kidneys is shown in red. The kidneys' blood supply was injected with the radioactive tracer technetium-99m (Tc-99m). This is detected by its emission of gamma rays. The renal blood supply can then be assessed and kidney disorders diagnosed.
