Kidneys. Coloured axial computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen at the level of the kidneys. The front of the body is at top. The kidneys are the roughly horse-shoe shaped areas (yellow) at lower centre right and left. Between the kidneys is a vertebra of the spine (round, white). Immediately above the spine is the aorta, the body's main artery (round). To the left of the aorta is part of the pancreas and at far left is part of the liver. Sections of the intestines are seen towards the front of the body (right and left). The kidneys filter waste from the blood and excrete it as urine.
