Healthy kidneys, coloured computed tomography (CT) scan. The kidneys are the two C-shaped white organs either side of the spinal vertebra (centre). Below the spine and kidneys are back muscles. The small round area above the spine is the aorta, the body's main artery. Above and around this are some coils of intestine. CT scanning uses X-rays passed through the body at different angles to build up an image of internal structures.
