Caption

Junction of small & large intestine: false-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the ileo-caecal junction, the joining of the small & large intestine. There is an abrupt transition in the mucosa between the villiform pattern of the ileum (blue, left) to the glandular form of the caecum (right gold). The tiny projections (villi) of the ileum are adaptations for absorption & digestion, whilst the glands of the large intestine are concerned with the formation of faeces through the absorption of water from the liquid residue of the small intestine. Magnification: x40 at 6x7cm size. Very similar to Plate 14 of "Viaggio".
