Transverse colon. Computed tomography (CT) scan of an axial section through the abdomen showing a healthy transverse colon (black, upper frame). The transverse colon is part of the large intestine. Its primary function is to absorb water from food that has already been largely digested by the small intestine. A section through one of the vertebrae (white) of the backbone is at lower centre. CT scanning uses X-rays to build up slice images through a patient. It is an important diagnostic tool.
