Healthy colon. Coloured computed tomography (CT) scan of axial sections through the abdomen showing the loops of a healthy colon (large intestine, orange). The colon's primary function is to absorb water from food that has already been digested by the small intestine. The human colon is about 1.5 metres long. A section through one of the vertebrae (white) of the backbone is at lower centre of each image. CT scanning uses X-rays to build up image slices through a patient. It is an important diagnostic tool.
