Caption

Respiratory system. Illustration of the human respiratory system. At top the sectioned head shows convolutions of the brain (orange) and the brainstem (long, pale). The brain controls respi- ration. Bone is shown in speckled white. Leading down from the mouth is the trachea (windpipe) with its rings (blue) of cartilage. The trachea conveys air through the bronchi (unseen) into the lungs (pink, spongy) where gas exchange takes place. Between the lungs is the body's blood pump, the heart (red and yellow). Above the heart are the heart's main vein (vena cava, blue) and main artery (aorta, red).
