Respiratory system. Artwork of the human respira- tory system overlaid on a sketch of a human torso. Leading from the mouth is the trachea (windpipe) with its rings of cartilage (blue). The trachea conveys air into the lungs (pink) through the bronchi (pale red, in lungs) to the alveoli (not seen) where gas exchange takes place. Between the lungs is the heart (red), which pumps oxygenated blood around the body. Both the heart and the lungs are protected by the ribs (white), which enclose them. The lungs are inflated and deflated by the contraction and relaxation of the diaphragm muscle (red, enclosed by lower ribs) and ribs.
