Lungs. Artwork based on a resin cast of the airways in the lungs. Air enters the lungs from the trachea (windpipe, top centre). This divides into two bronchi, which in turn divide into many smaller bronchioles. The bronchioles terminate in air sacs called alveoli (not seen). Red blood cells in capillaries around the alveoli take up oxygen in the air and release carbon dioxide.
