Caption

Lung cilia. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of cilia (hairs) lining the inner surface of a bronchiole, one of the small airways in a lung. These cilia help to keep the lungs free of infection. Mucus in the lungs traps bacteria and foreign bodies, and the cilia waft it up to the throat, from where it can be swallowed or coughed up. Magnification unknown.
