False-colour bronchograph of the bronchial tree (the network of airways in each lung, branching off the trachea - windpipe, that supplies air to the alveoli (air sacs) where gaseous exchange takes place. The trachea divides into 2 bronchi (left & right), which undergo further divisions; the smallest branches are termed bronchioles. Bronchography renders the airways visible on an x-ray film by prior injection of a radio-opaque contrast medium through the larynx. In false- colour the lungs are blue, & the ribs appear green. The technique is used to detect the location of such lung disorders as an abscess or a lung tumour.
