Caption

False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section of the human lung, showing the network of alveolor ducts and alveoli (air sacs) that form the final divisions of the bronchial tree (the trunk of which is the trachea, the windpipe). Alveoli are numerous (millions per lung) & adjacent ones would share the same blood capillary & connective tissue septum (brighter areas). It is in this extensive capillary bed of the pulmonary alveoli that the major function of the lung is performed, that is the exchange of gases across the very thin epithelia separating air & blood. Magnification: X 176 at 35mm size.
