Caption

Microcirculation of lung. False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the microvascular circulation of the lung, showing the network of capillaries surrounding the alveoli, the air sacs of the lung, where gaseous exchange with blood occurs. Casts are made, by injecting an unpolymerised mixture into the vascular system and allowing it to harden within the vessels. Digestion of the tissue with hydrogen peroxide solution leaves a replica of the vessels. Magnification: x240 at 6x7cm size.
