Coloured X-ray showing the lungs (red with blue- green contours) of a healthy person. The lungs represent the main organ of the respiratory system. They supply the body with the oxygen needed for aerobic metabolism and eliminate the waste product carbon dioxide. They are formed by a network of air passages which, in decreasing size, are the bronchi, the bronchioles and the tiny alveoli. It is through the thin walls of the alveoli that gases, notably oxygen and carbon dioxide, diffuse into or out of the blood. The yellow-golden area at lower right corresponds to the heart.
